Aspen Blues

Blue is a magic color! Blue evokes feelings of calm, tranquility, trust, and stability. It fosters the sensation of relaxation. Blue is a symbol of integrity, transparency, and authority. No wonder blue is one of the most popular colors in the world.

Blue is the color of the sky and sea. And since two-thirds of Earth's surface is covered with water, is it any wonder that ours is known as "the blue planet"?

In addition, many artists choose some shade of blue to convey shadows in their paintings. One of my top favorite shades of blue is Ultramarine Violet Blue Hue, a special creation that is part of the Richeson casein Shiva Series developed in consultation with Colorado artist Steven Quiller. It is simply a gorgeous color.

In my recent painting, "Aspen Blues," I used this unique shade as the underpainting to set the foundation for this woodsy landscape. From the brilliant blue sky down to the deep enchanting shadows, it's all this hue. (Obviously, with some white added to tint the sky lighter.)

I'm entering "Aspen Blues" in Paletteers Art Club's SMALL WORKS SPRING SHOW opening April 17 at Westminster's FUSE BOX Art Gallery. This show is judged by Randy Hale and runs through May 4, 2025. The public reception, May 2, is concurrent with a craft sale and other special celebrations--all part of Westminster's Art Week. Get the whole scoop under EVENTS. Drop by and bring the kids.
